The night was alive with flashing lights and colors. Cheesy carnival music played and blared into the night. The sounds of children laughing and screaming could be easily heard. The rides and the games were all loud and easily distracting to the eyes. Juno looked around, completely at home in the flurry of lights and sounds. It was like home to her…no…it was so much better than home. When she thought about her life at home…and the incredible amount of crap she put up with on a daily basis, it was wild and totally uncontrollable places like this that made her feel most comfortable.
“Maybe I should consider joining up with this place?” She wondered to herself. The idea was a good one…maybe they could accept her. Anything to get away and be a free bird. How often had she dreamed of just flying away…just sprouting wings and taking off…leaving the world behind her. She had dreamed about it ever since her mom had passed away…the thought caused tears to build up in her eyes.
She bundled up in her jacket and continued walking through the tents and rides and children. There was so much to see and so much to take in. Her step-father would be mad at her for not coming home on time…but she really didn’t care. For once, she felt a little bit of freedom, and she wasn’t about to end it yet. She watched as a little girl ran after her mother and clung to her mothers pants leg happily…her mind wandered back to her days at that age…when her mother would be there for her to jump on and play with…when her mother was still alive.
“Oof!” Juno collided with a solid object and nearly fell to the ground. She had been so distracted that she hadn’t seen where she was walking. She felt a slight pain in her head as she fell backwards, trying to steady herself. She looked to what she had run into…and saw a leather jacket and shirt standing in front of her. She followed the clothes up so that she could see that they belonged to a young man that looked only a little older than her.
“I’m so sorry!” She cried. “I didn’t even see you there.” The boy brushed off his jacket, barely looking phased.
“No, it’s okay. I should have moved.” He said. “Are you alright?” He asked. She nodded and started brushing herself off.
“I hope that you aren’t hurt.” She said quickly. The boy waved her off. “Believe me…it’ll take more than that to hurt me.” He held out his hand to her. She looked at it for a moment and then took it. “I’m Emmett by the way…what’s your name?”
“Juno.” She answered. Emmett smiled and bowed a little.
“It’s a pleasure.” Juno blushed.
“Well, aren’t you a gentlemen?” She asked. Emmett laughed and dropped his gaze.
“Thank you. So what brings you to the carnival?” Juno paused and shrugged her shoulders.
“I had to get out of the house.” She explained.
“Me too.” Emmett said calmly. Juno shot him a glance.
“Family problems?” She offered.
“You don’t know the half of it.” Emmett grumbled. Juno looked around and realized that there were a few rides that she had yet to go on.
“Well, if we’re both out here for the same reason, why don’t we hang out for a while?” She offered. Emmett beamed at the notion.
“Sounds fun…so what would you like to do first?” He asked.
The two rode a fair number of roller coasters and they had participated in a few games. Emmett learned that Juno had a pretty good eye for art and was able to pick out the best looking paintings at the art contest. She was even able to determine which ones were going to win. At the same time, Juno learned that Emmett had a fair amount of physical ability to him…he was unmatched in dart throwing and arm wrestling. She had cheered him on in a wrestling competition and he had even won her a prize while at the dart throwing stand. There was no question…the two were having a wonderful night.
“It’s getting a little late Juno,” Emmett stated as the moon was now high in the sky and most of the crowd had vanished, “maybe we should go ahead and leave? I’ll walk you home.” The two had been really having a wonderful time. Juno was holding a large stuffed wolf that Emmett had won for her in a dart throwing competition and Emmett was rubbing his shoulder after having a wrestling competition in the dirt. He looked exhausted, and Juno was feeling tired herself…however she was having too much fun to stop just yet. She shook her head at Emmett, still smiling.
“No, not yet.” She cried. “Just one more stop…please?” She asked. Emmett agreed.
“Okay, but we’ve pretty much done everything there is to do.” Juno began looking around for something to do or some event they hadn’t taken part in. However most of the tents and rides had started to close down. Just as she was about to give up, she located a small tent on the outskirts of the carnival.
“What’s that?” She asked. Emmett looked and shrugged.
“No idea.” H said simply. “Wanna take a look?” She nodded and took his arm as they traveled over to the large red tent. Emmett was about to open the tent flap, when it suddenly flew open on its own.
“Whoa!” Juno squeaked. “That’s cool!”
“Come in, children…come in.”
“Uh…that was creepy.” Emmett whispered. Juno smiled and walked inside.
“Let’s check it out!” Emmett followed her inside and they looked around. There were mirrors and cabinets with odd trinkets and items inside. In the middle of the tent was a large table, and a chair next to it. In the chair was an old woman with grey hair and very exotic clothing. She had on some colorful jewelry and her eyes were glazed over strangely. There was an odd aura about her that Emmett couldn’t explain.
"My name is, Madam Violet.” Emmett and Juno exchanged glances.
“Hi, my name is…” Emmett was interrupted as the old woman raised her fingers to silence him.
"I know your names...and I know what you want." She said mysteriously. Emmett and Juno both looked at her in awe.
"And what do we want?" Juno asked. The woman smiled happily.
"What else could you want...besides wishes?" She indicated all of the odd items all over the cabinets and cases. "This is a wish shop, after all." Emmet suddenly laughed.
"Oh...wishes huh?" Emmett laughed. The woman nodded.
"What does that mean? You can make our dreams come true?" Juno asked.
"I can make your dreams come true...but for a price."
"Bull." Emmett laughed. The woman gave Emmett a funny look.
"If you do not believe...then what have you to fear?" She asked. Emmett shrugged.
"Okay, I'll go along with it." Emmett laughed. Juno playfully shoved Emmett.
"Don't listen to him," Juno giggled, "he's a Neanderthal. Can you make my dreams come true?" The woman nodded slyly.
"Of course...” She reached under her table and pulled out a large vial of light blue liquid...it looked to be the same color as the light blue sky. "Drink this...and your deepest and most heartfelt dream will come true." Juno's eyes shined as she stared at the vial.
"How much is it?" The woman placed her finger to her lips and grinned.
"Because you believed, my dear...it is free." The gypsy whispered. She held out the potion for her to take...and Juno carefully took it and held it up to the lamp light so she could see it better. Emmett smiled.
"I hope it works." Emmett said kindly.
"What are you talking about?" She said with a giggle. "You don't even believe in this kind of stuff." Emmett shrugged it off.
"Well, it's never worked for me in the past."
"If you doubt it, why not try it yourself?" The gypsy asked. Emmett nodded.
"I might..." He said. Juno proceeded to thank the gypsy for the potion and, with Emmett by her side, they left the carnival.
"So, where to now?" Emmett asked. "Do you need me to walk you home?" Juno thought about her home...and how her father might react at the sight of her...and at the sight of her with a boy. She shook her head.
"I think I'd rather not go home tonight." Emmett shot her a look.
"Really?" He asked. Juno nodded. "Well, that's a coincidence...I wasn't planning on going home tonight either."
"Why not?" Juno asked.
"I just...didn't feel like it." Emmett said. However, he wasn't looking at her. There was something stressed behind his words. Like he was trying to hide something.
"Then what do you want to do?" Juno asked. Suddenly Emmett beamed, which seemed to shine through the dark.
"I think I have an idea!" Emmett muttered. "I know a place that we can go...and you're going to love it." Emmett took her by the hand and lead her off down a sidewalk near the outskirts of the city. Juno clutched the vial of liquid and stumbled after him, curious as to where they were going.
"Where is it." Juno asked.
"I don't want to spoil the surprise." Emmett whispered. With that, they took off into the night.
